Although
considered the "Black Sheep" of the Final Fantasy
series, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is allot better than most
of the crap RPGs that came out for the SNES. FFMQ still has
innovations that most games did not have back then.
Although
FFMQ is not the greatest game in the series, it is still a
well executed, traditional RPG aim for beginning RPGers. It
plays like any other Final Fantasy game except you control
only two characters at a time instead of four. The menus are
more user friendly than other FF game but is useful none the
less. This is the only FF game in the series that allows you
to save anywhere at any moment, I wish this feature was included
in more console RPGs.
You
do not get any freedom when exploring the overworld, instead
you guide you character to different locations highlighted
on the map. Battles are not random, you can see the the monsters
on the screen and you can choose who you want to attack.
The
story is very generic and is off the 'save the world from
destruction' category. You are the hero of the game that must
recover the four elemental crystals and restore nature.. or
something like that. It is passable, but not great. The translation
kind of weird with strange grammatical anomalies.
Graphics
are cartoony and simple with bright colors and simple lines.
The characters have sauser-plate eyes, and have glamorous
two frame animation. The battles characters a not animated
at all but do show damage when they are almost dead. Good
for it's time.
Music
is very Final Fantasyish with familiar songs we all love,
I love the town songs with there calm yet exciting orications.
Sounds on the other hand come strait form a Atari 2600 with
it slashes and beeps.
I
am puzzled why some 'hard-core FF'ers' hate this game because
it is a very fun game despite being a way too easy (FFMQ will
last around 25 hours). Maybe because it doesn't have Cloud
Strife in it?
